The onsen of Japan provides an intimate insight into the daily ritual of families in the rural villages of Japan. We have sat in onsen baths enveloped by steam in the hot, thermal waters, direct from the volcano; in secluded rock pools on a snow-covered mountaintop; outdoor mud onsen beside the river bank; to rustic local village onsens. The After the Bath Series was inspired by a traditional onsen in the Ancient Japanese capital of Edo, now called Nikko.
